This function is used to link characteristics and associated values to most Business Object i.e. Order, Employee, Part etc. This function can be used to view the available characteristics and to view the characteristics linked to the primary key of a specific table. This function also allows linked characteristics to be copied from one table to another.

 

If the option "copy from source table and key fields" is selected, one can copy characteristics and values from a table instance to a different table instance (i.e.characteristics linked to a specific part can be copied to a specific work centre.

This will be possible if the characteristics, are set to be allowed for the destination object.)

 

INQUIRE

The user must have a security profile linked to the function Characteristic Link with an access allowed of Inquire.

 

On this tab the following fields can be viewed:

If the user clicks on the Characteristics  icon on the main form and selects the Link or Copy option, this is the default setting.

 

It displays all available characteristics linked to the destination table, in the "Table Name" combo, from the Characteristic Link Mode and Characteristics tables.

 

When "Copy From Source Table and Key Fields" is checked, this field displays all available characteristics linked to the source table and key fields.

The user must have a security profile linked to the function Characteristic Link with an access allowed of Change.

 

The "Apply" button is only enabled when the user has the necessary profile and the user changes a value in the grid.  When the "Apply" button is clicked the following updates are performed:

 

1.  If the "Linked" column has been checked, a new record will be inserted in the Characteristic Link table.

 

2.  If the "Linked" column is unchecked, the record will be deleted from the Characteristic Link table.

 

3.  If the value has been changed in the "Value" column, the field characteristic value on the Characteristic Link table will be updated.

 

BUSINESS RULES:

 

1.  If a characteristic is linked to a part number on the Part Master table, it may not be linked to the part number's standard item number on the Standard Item Master table.

 

2.  If a characteristic is linked to a standard item number on the Standard Item Master table, it may not be linked to the standard item number's part number on the Part Master table.

The grid displays the characteristic, linked (i.e. the characteristic is linked to the table name and key fields), characteristic value, mandatory and the applied value limitations.

 

When the "Copy From Source Table and Key Fields" check box is checked an extra column, Linked To Source, will be displayed (to easily identify the characteristics to copy).

 

Characteristic

It is a read only column/field that displays the characteristics according to the "Display" option selected.

 

Linked To Destination

This column/field indicates whether or not the characteristic is linked to the destination table and key fields.  You may check or uncheck this column as required BUT cannot uncheck the column if the characteristic is mandatory.

 

Linked To Source

When the "Copy From Source Table and Key Fields" check box is checked, this column is displayed to easily identify the characteristics, linked to the source table and key fields to copy to the destination table and key field.  This column is read only.

 

Value

This column/field, is only enabled if a characteristic is linked i.e. the "Linked To Destination" column is checked.

 

If the value in this column is a "Date", a calendar is allows the user to change the date. The date the user selects will be governed by the value limitations set on the Characteristics function.

 

If the value is "Text" and the operator is "In", this field will become a combo box that is populated with possible values entered on the Characteristics function for the selected characteristic.

 

If the value is "Text" and the operator is "Equal To", the user can place a text value directly into the grid. The text entered by the user will be governed by the value limitations set on the Characteristics function for the selected characteristic.

 

If the value is "Text" and the operator is "Like", the user can enter any value into the grid that contains the "Like" value governed by the Characteristics function for the selected characteristic.

 

If the value is "Numeric", the user can enter numeric values directly into the grid. The numeric values entered by the user will be governed by the value limitations set on the Characteristics function.

 

If no operator is specified, the user can enter any value relevant to the field type i.e. date, text.

 

Mandatory

This is a read only column/field that indicates whether a characteristic is mandatory or not and is displayed from the Characteristic Link Mode table.

 

Applied Value Limitations

This is a read only column/field and is an indication of the characteristic limitations as set on the Characteristics function.

hmtoggle_plus1Copy From Source Table And Key Fields

When checked, the "Table Name" combo box and the "Source Key Fields" grid will be enabled.  Characteristics can be copied from an instance of one table to an instance of another table.

 

Once the key field values have been selected (for both the source and the destination key fields), the "Characteristics" grid will be populated with all the characteristics linked to the source table that can be copied to the destination table.

 

When this function is invoked from the characteristic menu icon and the "Copy" option is selected, this setting will default to checked.

hmtoggle_plus1Destination Key Fields And Values

Once a valid destination table has been selected, all the primary key fields for the selected table will be displayed in sequence.

 

It displays the key field name(s), value, and key field number (shows the position of the key in the table) from the table, in the "Table Name" combo box.

 

The key fields must be entered in sequence.  When you click on the value cell for each key field, a combo box will be displayed.

 

If this function has been invoked from a calling function, the selected values for the calling function will be displayed in the value column.

 

The number of characters to be entered before the list is shown is governed by "populate length".

 

EXAMPLE:

When selecting key field values for the Order Master, all order numbers will be displayed, but, once an order number has been selected, only the order types for the selected order number will be displayed in the list.

 

It is the same combo box that is used to display the selection of valid key field values for all destination key field values.

It displays all the table names to which characteristics can be linked.  

 

It is populated from the Column Values table where column name is equal to "Characteristic_Applications".

 

When the Characteristic Link function is invoked via the main form's Characteristics  icon using either the View, Link or Copy option, the table name that is associated with the calling function will be displayed in this field.

hmtoggle_plus1Only Mandatory Characteristics

If the user selects this option, it displays all available characteristics linked to the destination table name, in the Table Name field, from the Characteristics and the Characteristic Link Mode tables where the field, mandatory on the Characteristic Link Mode table is set to yes "1".

 

This will be the default when opening the function from either Specific Function or Book Menu.  When "Copy From Source Table and Key Fields" is checked, all the mandatory characteristics linked to the source table and key fields is displayed .

If the user clicks on the Characteristics  icon on the main form and selects the View option, this is the default setting.

 

It only displays characteristics that are linked to the destination table name and the key fields, in the "Table Name" combo and "Key Fields" grid, from the Characteristic Link table.

 

When "Copy From Source Table and Key Fields" is checked, it displays characteristics that are linked to the source table and key fields.
