Show/Hide Hidden Text

This function is used to define and maintain (user-defined attributes) to link to System business objects like orders, order lines, customers, parts etc.

It also provides for the creation of a characteristic structure (optional) and once defined, the relationship between characteristics can be viewed in exploded (top-down) or imploded (bottom-up) modes.

INQUIRE

The user must have a security profile linked to the function Characteristics with an access allowed of Inquire.

On this tab the following fields can be viewed:

hmtoggle_plus1Add

The user must have a security profile linked to the function Characteristics with an access allowed of Add.

The "Add" button is enabled when a new unique characteristic description is entered.

When the "Add" button is clicked, the new characteristic is inserted into the Characteristic table.

hmtoggle_plus1Allow Multiple Values

When checked, this setting allows a characteristic to use multiple values per linked key.

When unchecked (default), a characteristic can only have one value per linked key.

hmtoggle_plus1Change

The user must have a security profile linked to the function Characteristics with an access allowed of Change.

When any of the fields are changed and the "Change" button is clicked, the characteristic record on the Characteristic table, is updated.

hmtoggle_plus1Characteristic Applications Grid

The "Table Name" column is populated with all the tables in the system, to which a characteristic may be linked.

In the "Allowed" and "Mandatory" columns, the user can indicate by means of a check in the appropriate box, whether the selected characteristic is allowed on the selected table and whether it is mandatory or not.

When the "Change" button is clicked, the relationship between the characteristic ID, table name, and mandatory column selected are updated on the Characteristic Table Link Mode table.

hmtoggle_plus1Characteristic

It is populated with the first part of the description and the characteristic ID from the Characteristic table.

Each Characteristic description should be unique. With the addition of a new characteristic, the system generates the unique characteristic ID.  If the user wants to specify a long description or change the description, the user can change it in the Description field provided.

The number of characters to be entered before the list is shown is governed by the value of "populate length" (mandatory).  It is an alphabetical key field where the length must be between 3 and 255 characters.

hmtoggle_plus1Delete

The user must have a security profile linked to the function Characteristics with an access allowed of Delete.

This operation will not be performed if this Characteristic ID exists on any of the following tables:

Table Name

 Field Name

Characteristic Link

 Characteristic

When the "Delete" button is clicked, the characteristic is deleted from the Characteristic, Characteristic Table Link Mode and Characteristic Structure tables.

hmtoggle_plus1Date Value From

It is only enabled when a field type of "Date" and an operator value of =, <, <=, >, >=, <>, or Between are selected.

When a field type of "Date" and an operator value other than "Like" or "In" are selected this field is mandatory and the value of the date from must be smaller than the date to selected.

hmtoggle_plus1Date Value To

It is only enabled when a field type of "Date" and an operator value of "Between" is selected.

This field is then mandatory and must have a value greater than the date from selected.

hmtoggle_plus1Description

It display a short narrative description of the characteristic ID selected.  It is an alphabetical field where the length must be between 3 and 255 characters (mandatory).

hmtoggle_plus1Field Type

The number of characters to be entered before the list is shown is governed by the value of "populate length" (optional).

The field type can be "Date", "Text", "Decimal", "Integer" or "SQL Text"

When a field type of "Text" and a valid operator value of either "=", "In", "Like", or "<>" are selected, the "Text Value" text box is enabled.

When a field type of "Date" and a valid operator value of either "=", ">", ">=", "<", "<=", or "<>" are selected, the "Date Value" text box is enabled.

When a field type of "Decimal" or "Integer" and a valid operator value of either "=", ">", ">=", "<", "<=", or "<>" are selected, the "Numeric Value" field is enabled.  If an operator value of "Between" is selected the "Numeric Value From" and "To" fields are enabled.

When a field type of "SQL Text" is selected, the SQL extraction text must be created via the tab "SQL Text". The operator and text values are thus disabled.

The SQL text implies that values will be populated from a selected table as per the "where" clause for the selection.

Therefore, if you add characteristics where valid values to be linked resides in a data base table (Part numbers from Part master, Employee ID's from Employee master, Nodes from the Node table, Equipment ID's from Equipment base and others) then the SQL text option is the one to apply.

Only users with a profile to which the function "Characteristics SQL text" has been linked, can add and maintain the SQL for the selected characteristic.

hmtoggle_plus1Numeric Value From

It is only enabled when a field type of "Decimal" or "Integer" is selected (mandatory).

When a field type of "Decimal" is selected, this field can handle 7 digits before and 5 digits after the decimal point.

When "Integer" is selected, this field can only handle 7 digits before the decimal point and no decimals.

hmtoggle_plus1Numeric Value To

It is only enabled when a field type of "Decimal" or "Integer" and an operator value of "Between" is selected (mandatory).

When a field type of "Decimal" is selected, this field can handle 7 digits before, and 5 digits after the decimal point.

When "Integer" is selected, this field can only handle 7 digits before the decimal point and no decimals.

hmtoggle_plus1Operator Value

It is populated with the column description and column values fields from the Column Values table where the column name has a value of "Characteristics Operator".

The number of characters to be entered before the list is shown is governed by the value of "populate length" (optional).

The operator value can be =, <, <=, >, >=, Between, In, Like, or <>.

When a field type of "Date" and an operator value are selected, the "Date Value" field is mandatory.  When a field type of "Text" and an operator value are selected, the "Text Value" field is mandatory.

When a field type of "Decimal" and a valid operator value of either "=", ">", ">=", "<", "<=", or "<>" are selected, the "Numeric Value" field is enabled.  If an operator value of "Between" is selected, the "Numeric Value From" and "To" fields are enabled.
