External Object Type

This function is used to define groups of external objects, for example, MS Word Specification Documents, Autocad design drawings, Training Certificates etc.

 

In addition, the name of the application, the drive and the path can be specified. The application is needed to view the external objects.

 

INQUIRE

The user must be have a security profile linked to the function External Object Type with an access allowed of Inquire.

 

On this tab the following fields can be viewed:

The user must have a security profile linked to the function External Object Type with an access allowed of Add.

 

The "Add" button is enabled when the user enters a new object type is entered.   When the "Add" button is clicked, the following is performed:

 

1.  The system validates that at least one application name and path is entered.

 

2.  The system selects the max object type from the Object Type table i.e. the next object number is determined.

 

3.  It inserts the new object type, description, load "1" or "0", execute name, access directory 1, access directory 2, access directory 3, access directory 4, browse, and pre viewable into the Object Type table.

This is the application needed to view the external objects that are part of the selected external object type, for example, Mspaint or Msword etc.

 

It is an alphanumeric field with a maximum length of 50 characters (optional).

 

You do not have to specify the path if the application is in the system path.  This field is mandatory if nothing is entered in the  "If Not Found Try" fields.

When the  browse button is clicked, it displays a common dialog box where a specific file name and path can be selected.

When checked, and the user wants to view or play an external object linked to this external object type, and the application cannot be found using either the Name of Application in System Path or the following four names specified, the system will display a common dialog box and ask you to direct it to the application that it needs to view/play the object.

The user must have a security profile linked to the function External Object Type with an access allowed of Change.

 

The "Change" button is enabled when an existing object type is selected.  

 

When the "Change" button is clicked, the following updates are performed:

 

1. It validates that at least one application name and path is provided.

 

2. The fields load, execute method, executable name, description, access directory 1, access directory 2, access directory 3, access directory 4, browse to find, and pre viewable on the Object Type table, are updated with the new values.

The user must have a security profile linked to the function External Object Type with an access allowed of Delete.

 

The "Delete" button is enabled when an existing object type is selected.  When the "Delete" button is clicked, the object type is deleted from the Object Type table.

 

The delete will not be performed if this Object Type exists on any of the following:

This is a short narrative description of the object type selected.

 

It is an alphanumeric field where the length must be between 3 and 70 characters (mandatory).

hmtoggle_plus1If Not Found Try: (Access Path And Application Name)

Specify the drive name, path and the application name with its extension.  It can be typed in or selected using the browse button.

 

When trying to view an external object through it's application, the four entries are tried in sequence i.e. if not found on first text box, it will try the next one.

 

One text box is mandatory if the "name of application in system path" field is not entered.

When checked, and the user wants to view or play an external object linked to this external object type,the system will activate the application and open the external object you want to view/play.

 

When unchecked, the application will be activated but no external object opened.

This is used to group external objects. As an example, an object type may be created for all Autocad design drawings and an object type may be created for all training certificates obtained by employees.

 

It is populated with the object type and description from the Object Type table.

 

The number of characters to be entered before the list is shown is governed by the value of "populate length" (mandatory).

When checked, and the user wants to view or play an external object linked to this external object type, the system will attempt to preview the external object with a local inherent control within the system.

 

If unsuccessful, the system will attempt to activate the application as specified for the external object type.
