A maintenance significant item (MSI) is a system, sub-system, or functional group that requires non-trivial logistic support and resources for its preventative and corrective maintenance.
The failure of an MSI, or part thereof, usually causes the loss of one or more of the major functions of an end item with safety, operational, and/or major economic consequences. An MSI is identified on the Part Master function.
A mission describes the functioning of an MSI according to certain specifications and tolerances under certain conditions (at least one mission has to be defined for an MSI).
The size or length of a mission is expressed in the number of "Denomination of Life" (DOL) units.
This function is used to define and maintain one or more missions (functional applications) for an MSI and to specify the duration of the mission by expressing it in "Denomination of Life (DOL) units" as defined for the MSI part.
EXAMPLE
Mission = "Drive vehicle at constant speed of 120km/hr on tarred road surface" where duration = 500 and DOL unit = kilometers.

The reason for defining an MSI mission is to ultimately define possible failures that can result from such a mission and further identify preventative and corrective maintenance tasks to either prevent or rectify failures.
On this tab the following fields can be viewed:

This operation will not be performed if any of the following exist:
1. A selected Linked Mission has a scenario in the Scenario Mission table attached to it, i.e. there are still scenario MSI Missions linked to the MSI.
2. Failures exist for the selected MSI part in the Mission Failures table i.e. there are still mission failures linked to this MSI mission. |
It is populated by a procedure "Product Structure get MSI". It is populated with all MSI parts that do not already have missions defined. The grid displays the following data:
SELECT When clicked, the line is enabled allowing the user to enter or change data for the specific line.
LEVEL Is used to indicate the level of the part within the mission.
MSI PART NUMBER Displays available MSI part numbers for the selected MSI/MSI Parent.
DESCRIPTION It displays a description of the MSI Part Number.
PART DOL When the DOL units are displayed, it also displays the units in which the duration is measured (as defined in the "DOL" frame on the Part Master function).
MISSION The mission is a user-defined number that is assigned to the mission. The length must be between 1 and 20 characters (mandatory).
DOL UNIT It displays the duration of a mission. The size or length of a mission is expressed in the number of Denomination of Life (DOL) units for example, kilometers traveled, hours, distance, actions etc.
DESCRIPTION This field displays a short narrative description of the mission. When a new mission is entered, the user must also enter a mission description.
It is an alphanumeric field where the length must be between 3 and 255 characters (mandatory). |
When an MSI Parent is selected, the function will display all missions already defined for the selected MSI in this grid.
The user can also unlink linked MSI missions, by selecting a linked MSI mission and clicking the button. |
To link an available msi mission, select a mission in the "Available MSI Missions" grid and click the button.
When the button is clicked, the selected available msi mission is inserted into the MSI Mission table and added to the "Linked MSI Missions" grid. |
It is populated with the part number and part description from the Part Master table.
The number of characters to be entered before the list is shown is governed by the value of "populate length" (mandatory).
The MSI Parent is the MSI part number for which missions are defined. Once the part number is selected, the function will display all missions already defined for the selected MSI in the "Linked Missions" list box. |
To unlink a linked MSI mission, select the linked MSI mission in the "Linked MSI Missions" grid and click the button.
When the button is clicked, the selected msi mission is deleted from the MSI Mission table and added to the "Available MSI Missions" grid. |
