The product code is used to group parts together that belong to the same product range or group.

This grouping does not only serve the purpose to do reporting at product level, but to specify business rules applicable to all items in the group.

These business rules apply to the level of engineering change control, sales and profit margin control, stock application rules, trade discount matrixes and authorization to override sales prices and profit margins.

Parts linked to the same product must therefore have adequate similarities with regards to their manufacturing process and the manner in which change control is exercised.

Inventory control also comes into play since and at product level decisions are made regarding back flushing of inventory (post deduction of component/material issuing), allowance for negative stock, decimal stock quantities and participation in the Equipment base.

Via the product code, products can also be linked to a product family.

The product code enables you to identify the product to which end items,

components, orders or projects relate to and all orders and projects, as well as counter sales that relate to a product via the order line product code or as entered during the transaction, will be subject to the rules and guidelines stated for the product. It is therefore an important decision to determine the optimum data model to be followed.

Every end item can have it's own product code, but this would dramatically increase the effort to maintain these rules per product per end-item and to implement changes when business tactics are to be adjusted. As an example, all men's leather shoes of all different sizes, and possibly even some style variations, may belong to the same product code, since it is likely that the manufacturing process of all these items, as well as the change control and discount structure should have enough commonality to group such items together.

In addition, it identifies responsibility for the product relating to Configuration Management, Trade Discounts and Product Scheduling and allows you to retrieve information by product concerning inventory analysis, budgeting, sales etc.
