The following steps are to be performed in order to link a single component to a parent:

1.        Click on the left "Method" button until it shows.

2.        Click on the right "Method" button until it shows.

3.        Enter the components part number in the Component To Be Linkeddrop down combo.  The system will open a drop down list showing part numbers starting with the characters you have entered.

4.        Select the component number you require from the drop down list by clicking on it.

5.        Enter the parent part number in the Maintained Parent drop down combo.  The system will open a drop down list showing all part numbers starting with the characters you have entered.

6.        Select the parent from the drop down list by clicking on its part number.  If any components are already linked to the parent you have selected, these components will be displayed in the Linked Components list box.

7.        Click on the Engineering & Manufacturing Data tab and enter a value in the Quantity Per field.

8.        Click the  button to add it to the Linked Components list box.  The system will give a message if the component has been linked successfully.  Make sure that the Effective Date (defaults to the current date) is correct before you do the link.

9.        You may then select the newly added component in the Linked Components list and proceed to the other tabs (which will then be enabled) to enter more data specific to engineering, manufacturing or maintenance or substitution. The Position tab will only enable if the selected Parent part allows position annotations to be specified (this is defined on the Parent's Part Master record).
10.        Also see Serial and Lot Tracking To End Item Level on System Configuration. If this was set to "Yes", other rules comes into play to ensure that if the component is serialised or lot number controlled, all planned parent parts (excluding planning bills) are also serialised or lot controlled.
